I told him that I don't see the details as object. Rather, I see them as small random shapes. And I only draw the shapes I see. I don't try to define the objects because I can't really see what those objects are, visually. Just draw the shapes. And I colour everything else dark. In this case, I intensified the dark, giving it more contrast. This results in a more graphic look, which I personally like. This is a technique I'd use for when I'm drawing backgrounds for comics. What I learn in urban sketching helps me draw better scenes for comics.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is a video on how I did it: <a href="https://youtu.be/DI4FsO0Hp6o?si=ikt8D0B1C3VkDW58">https://youtu.be/DI4FsO0Hp6o?si=ikt8D0B1C3VkDW58</a></div><p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-76234996951099146432024-03-09T11:45:00.009+08:002024-03-09T11:45:00.140+08:00Going even looser and more free<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I've been enjoying the sketches by <a href="https://www.semykina.com" target="_blank">Victoria Semykina</a>. It reminds me how playful and free drawing can be. She uses mixed media to draw her sketches. I've not attended her classes, nor do I know what principles she uses. But from observing her art, I have a few guesses. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'd say that drawing loose and free isn't about randomly using paint and colours. There are a few basic principles I keep in mind as I do my loose drawings. Perhaps 3. They are my boundaries. But I'm free to go crazy within those boundaries. For the drawings below, I'd say my 3 principles are:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1. Tonal value contrast will make more important areas stand out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2. colour theory (eg. complimentary colour)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3. texture</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here I started with the Posca markers. I did the colouring part first. I coloured in the big shapes. And also importantly, I used the contour drawing method where I don't look at my paper (hardly at all) and got those big essential shapes down.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I added in a darker tones with another Posca marker, also with the contour drawing method.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I used a pencil or pen tool. Since Posca markers have a smooth creamy texture, I felt they would pair with the "crispiness" of a rough pen or pencil. Yes I think in terms of food texture!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And that's how the pictures below were done!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; And when do we not need to use them?<iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/Mg7K0e7UeTE?si=l0I6HDH6YxLb1B3n" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Mg7K0e7UeTE/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>I was originally going to do a video on how to make more polished lines for comics but ended up with talking about line variation. Sometimes, I do like the ideas develop organically. I was comparing tools that give me a mono line width vs tools that give me line variation. As I was doing this, I found that I could not say that lines with a mono line width were less polished. It all depends on how I draw with it - the speed, how tightly I hold the pen, whether I'm using more angular or curvy lines and also how neatly I draw and join my lines. Drawing with a mono-line width pen can produce some very polished and spectacular artwork. Paired with a colouring medium like watercolours, acrylic or gouache or even digital mediums, the final artwork can look amazing. Though, because the lines itself doesn't really help much with making certain areas stand out and other areas recede into the background (but it does provide small bits of contrast around all the shapes, making everything stand out more), I would need to work harder in getting the tonal value contrasts in the colouring to make certain areas of the pictures stand out. The job falls mostly on the colouring part.</div><div><br /></div><div>Conversely, if I have lots of variation in my lines, my colouring doesn't need to work so hard in making the contrasts stand out. In fact, if it does too much in that area, the lines itself may seem redundant. After all, outlines don't exist in real-life scenes. They were created by us humans to add bits of contrast around all the shapes in our drawings. So if the colouring itself can bring out all the details of a scene using careful tonal value contrasts (as seen in paintings by old masters), no outline is needed.</div><div><br /></div><div>But outlines do allow us artists to record a scene quicker, with simpler rendering of tonal values in the colouring part. When my lines have more line variation, I'm finding that I should go even simpler in my colouring, or else it would seem over-done.</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, this isn't not fact and doctrine. But these are my own discoveries so far! :)</div>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-36183160389122733872024-02-28T21:40:00.009+08:002024-02-28T21:40:42.194+08:00Sketching while waiting<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_LohhzfEGg_tmEu0RrQBNR46PXHNI8QPX7V978yanZ9c4oj1kpglOHiSA9Z2T7YLct_rhSwjVy2TFLuouwra0CshyphenhyphencQ5OvhWzwrLLUJC4TPI7ju3qB3GeFHNe7m2roy_fv-TPblPhjUfXFPjYYaFfBzq2wzPiHT5rGpMqnwYrBHZdNWAFEQ/s1701/christmas%20party.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1701" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_LohhzfEGg_tmEu0RrQBNR46PXHNI8QPX7V978yanZ9c4oj1kpglOHiSA9Z2T7YLct_rhSwjVy2TFLuouwra0CshyphenhyphencQ5OvhWzwrLLUJC4TPI7ju3qB3GeFHNe7m2roy_fv-TPblPhjUfXFPjYYaFfBzq2wzPiHT5rGpMqnwYrBHZdNWAFEQ/w452-h640/christmas%20party.jpg" width="452" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This was a page from my December sketchbook. On that day, I was doing the <a href="https://youtu.be/QdSe0ZYbTWA" target="_blank">cats YouTube video</a> then we had to attend this Christmas party with my wife's friends. We spent the whole afternoon there. The food was good and my wife enjoyed her time with her friends. I did engage in some conversation but after some time, I was just waiting to go home. I could have distracted myself with my phone, but I hate too much screen time. So I sketched while I waited. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I felt this kept me more present with everyone around me and more observant, and at the same time, I was also improving and experimenting with my drawing skills. Yep this is one of my quick and fast formats where I work small and quick. I used a thinner nib for this one (Signo DX 0.38), and that takes up a bit more time. But I had time. All except the last scene was drawn from direct observation. In the last panel, I drew from my memory. I drew what Ollie and I did later that night- work on the animation for the cat video. It's at the very end of the video. We used the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stop-motion-studio/id441651297">Stop Motion app.</a> If you haven't seen it. Here’s the plan. We’re learn the basics on how to put together comics pages that are clear and simple, followed by a hands-on practice where you’ll do a short comic capturing our own daily life in meaningful ways that will make it worth looking back on years later. Yes comics involve drawing but you don’t need to be an experienced artist to take part. Any level of drawing is welcome. And there will be some guidance for how to draw. <p></p><p>Oh yes, I was reminded by the Book Council that this workshop is for ages 14-18yrs. So do take note of this before signing up!</p><p>To sign up, visit the link here: https://www.bookcouncil.sg/outreach-details/ywl-2024-cmcs</p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-49976506704043184522024-02-19T21:42:00.002+08:002024-02-19T21:42:29.664+08:00How I sketch during a busy week<iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/l1xzBRPU_7c?si=MCv_PD-1rCvTyh74" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/l1xzBRPU_7c/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>Apart from being illustrator, I teach, have kids to look after, driving my daughter to school and back, and there are my own personal projects (like comics) and other stuff. Life can be packed. But I do feel I need to relax and have some personal time. Sketching is one way I like to enjoy that time. In fact, when I sketch, I create a small bubble of relax time for myself. I remember my friend, Parka, saying that when he does an urban sketch, it feels like a holiday. I agree. It can feel like a tiny holiday amidst all the things I have to do. </div><div><br /></div><div>Sketching big and spending almost an hour do it isn't practical for me. But I've noticed that this quick sketch format I've developed over time seems to allow me to sketch even during busy weeks. Still I don't do it every day. But when I do remember to do it, I'm able to in this format. Sketching is a way I keep my skills sharp as an illustrator. And I want to enjoy it at the same time. So it's a balance making sure I keep up with the practice and but not force myself to do it such that it becomes a chore.</div><div><br /></div><div>Just me rambling here. But anyways, this video helped me clarify my thoughts about the little things I do to allow me to sketch while having a busy week. And it was from a moment that happened early last year 2023. (Yep I've been taking a long time to get comics out.) One possible reason - a comic takes about 2hrs+ to complete, from sketch to inking to colouring. So if I'm too busy, I put it off. But for this comic, I realised, I had put it off for too long and I just went ahead and drew it directly with a kakimori nib (or a dip pen, maybe) dipped in ink on watercolour paper. There was a high amounts of "don't care-ness". Propelled by the thought that if I didn't draw it out, it would never get drawn. </p><p>So I drew it out in maybe 10-15minutes. And then I probably took another 5-10 minutes to colour it. With watercolours I realise that I can't overthink it. Just fill up the areas quickly and move on. No refinement needed. To cover over mistakes, I use Luma bleed proof white. So yeah, drawing comics with natural media can be a LOT quicker, with enough "don't care-ness" thrown in.</p><p>The cons of doing comics with natural media is - I realised my comic panels were a little too close to each other and it affected eye flow so I had to digitally space the panels apart. That's why the comic is longer in height than normal. That took some time to get right because I had to clone the texture of the lovely watercolour paper as well. If the background was just white, it might have been easier. But that's the troublesome part of keeping that nice natural media drawing look good with textures and all.</p><p>So there, pros and cons! Which kind of comic looks better to you? A more digitally drawn comic or a one drawn with natural media? Or does it even make a difference to you?</p><p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-39232128265155728402024-02-07T19:28:00.005+08:002024-02-07T19:31:45.253+08:00The factors that play a part in how a drawing turns out<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I've been pretty busy with work, YouTube videos, kids and more these days. It takes some effort to record simple moments like these. I recorded this in my "note and throw away" notebook. Not my sketchbook. I think it records not just the events, but how I was feeling at that moment in time. And by that, I mean the speed of line, the attention to details, the looseness of the drawing etc. Perhaps I wouldn't be able to draw it the same way if I was more relaxed and recorded it after a few more weeks had passed. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Yep, that's what I think about. When it comes to drawing, it's not simply drawing stuff on paper. It's also the emotions, stress level, tiredness, the limitations of time that factor in on the output. And I'm interested to see what outputs when the factors change. Though I don't remember feeling amazing when I drew this, somehow, the factors here worked together to produce this charming (in my eyes) recording haha.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtQ3bf3IynhBSypEzuMKi4Rw1uQBdoaZgMBUjoNaAIviWJjEF6gWzqZ8WdjazBKrWmviB38RaVBf6ygk9Z4gIDwhF-N__nJ2AWlFGXeLje5rHjJqOWRRAmpF-Mw0yM7O63qlE2p5M9DwMXksInvW2iDZfIojEQ1nk6YQNw3GgyPpt_j8Hfzg/s1050/pots%20and%20pans.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtQ3bf3IynhBSypEzuMKi4Rw1uQBdoaZgMBUjoNaAIviWJjEF6gWzqZ8WdjazBKrWmviB38RaVBf6ygk9Z4gIDwhF-N__nJ2AWlFGXeLje5rHjJqOWRRAmpF-Mw0yM7O63qlE2p5M9DwMXksInvW2iDZfIojEQ1nk6YQNw3GgyPpt_j8Hfzg/w610-h640/pots%20and%20pans.jpg" width="610" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I added the colours digitally.</div><br /> <p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-73353636144278094642024-02-07T11:28:00.007+08:002024-02-07T11:31:53.366+08:00Basic principles for drawing comics<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oCQvx6IzFtU?si=5Y3KOmc_9qy68mnA" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>These are things I look out for when I draw comics. Like, forcing myself to take a break, even when there is so much I have to do. I think taking a break has to be classified as something I have to do too, instead of something I do when I've cleared work. Urban sketching, catching up with friends, oh and coffee is a good combination for taking a break. It's good for my mind. My mind and body needs it:)</div>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-41156508631033433322024-01-22T10:20:00.003+08:002024-01-22T10:20:26.261+08:00Changing who I'm talking to<p>In this comic, I was trying out directing the comic at Toby instead of a general audience. I imagine him reading this years later and it might be cool if it spoke directly to him instead. I'm thinking, it could also have changed how the whole story feels. It felt it made it a bit more simpler and I wasn't concerned so much about how to make it interesting for the public. I just had to make it interesting for Toby to read (when he finally can). Right now, he's only started speaking and can only say these words. Drawn with a Parallel pen on watercolour paper and coloured with watercolours. Only digital process here was the scanning and a bit of touch up.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipB8WETwtgHQrq_q8g-CfjftpzhHaFMCZTbRXdDgGA-XaFI6iJf1lIfEOZSkB-2kZehdLqhgQ4hghthVEYoXa7zvHOiFbwRp5N652lQtx4cLxgyTI8YKKA7Y5eslfHCna3hdiB4MQuHZ-l9yhltpSMQeQWsg4-GkAuWMbRrCbaxp1_zdM68w/s1455/toby%20can%20say.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1455" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipB8WETwtgHQrq_q8g-CfjftpzhHaFMCZTbRXdDgGA-XaFI6iJf1lIfEOZSkB-2kZehdLqhgQ4hghthVEYoXa7zvHOiFbwRp5N652lQtx4cLxgyTI8YKKA7Y5eslfHCna3hdiB4MQuHZ-l9yhltpSMQeQWsg4-GkAuWMbRrCbaxp1_zdM68w/w440-h640/toby%20can%20say.jpg" width="440" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-893476124874713902024-01-12T09:42:00.008+08:002024-01-12T09:43:46.682+08:00Having less time can be a good thing<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Having less time to draw comics toward the end of 2023 forced me to just draw directly with a dip pen and colour it with watercolours. I noticed that if I had more time, I might do the pen lines like this, but then do the colouring digitally, so that I don't risk "ruining" the lines. But with even less time in December, it was "draw it out or it's going to be forgotten." So I just used what little time I had (sometimes, I'd to make myself 20minutes even though I think I can't afford it) to draw it out - lines and watercolour all together. I went the risky route, and did everything with natural media. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What I found: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1. I actually finished the comic a lot quicker than if I completed it digitally.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. It was a lot more fun and relaxing doing the comic</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">3. The textures of natural media (both lines and how watercolours rest on paper) looks so much richer than something I'd produce digitally.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Maybe being too careful about not "ruining" the artwork actually adds a lot more layers of work for us and sometimes doesn't make the work better. Maybe not caring so much makes art a lot better. Having less time can force me to do that!:)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin-jQnMSXp9iNfM4qyEhTiZ5nL3FzHcUyL0ppEt_XKoSYIv-5h_mXmMg91ZfXwruB8HFgWgwiqVwygxtK2fTrmEewKFO09a6v2Dl7eflyUykpmL_If91S3Dte-sLY1d_m9zbui-aOaZKD0IAUMZef3MP9zNS0oD-CfmriSlAmdY5HmA_55WQ/s1425/rebels-sm.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1425" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin-jQnMSXp9iNfM4qyEhTiZ5nL3FzHcUyL0ppEt_XKoSYIv-5h_mXmMg91ZfXwruB8HFgWgwiqVwygxtK2fTrmEewKFO09a6v2Dl7eflyUykpmL_If91S3Dte-sLY1d_m9zbui-aOaZKD0IAUMZef3MP9zNS0oD-CfmriSlAmdY5HmA_55WQ/s16000/rebels-sm.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div>Kakimori nib and watercolours on watercolour paper</div>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-2532834397801141762024-01-08T16:48:00.004+08:002024-01-08T16:48:27.719+08:00Making comics about your own life<div>Starting the new year, it's been quite crazy with loads of stuff. One of them was getting this video done. So I might be posting a little less these couple weeks to get things organised. This one covers how I actually go about doing longer comics, particularly autobiographical comics. If you ever wanted to do comics about your life, but don't know where to start, maybe this will help in some ways:)</div><div><br /></div><div>Do check out the links in the video description. It has been about 2 months already? Well, I actually did another part 4 page. But then, I realised it didn't work with the pace of the overall story. So I'm continuing the saga with this page instead. This keeps the action going. I showed Yvonne this page and she said she'd forgotten all this already. Because I've been so busy, I decided to do this comic entirely in Procreate (digitally) this time. I wonder if anyone will notice. It does feel different doing it digitally. Doing it fast, it's ok. But over an extended period of time, staring at the screen, it does it tiring and I think of the simplicity of ink on paper.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Still figuring out how to get this comic done in a more timely fashion. But for now, it's coming out in spurts like this! At least, I'm getting it done! Thanks for reading anyways, whoever you are! And Merry Christmas!:)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>The comics for this series will take awhile. But if you are interested in my first collection about my experiences as a first-time dad, here is the <a href="https://payhip.com/b/ArEbV" target="_blank">ebook</a>.</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQzP3sq_qedapOCCgyOpBEaQyfFIc89EZHzMiTI7q4gdZZxzkBtXqSPfR_DABn25G5qIVhEESJyFWwptgKTwbJC8j4AtZ8TXMT0gkRNo30GHvMSw7NFgn7fVWFIYZyGYD8lKTwM3TKi_BrTJaB3MVPwnhkGXQoc_Ln5Kfiksaiwz7erWkNhQ/s1414/Changes_4-_Night.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1414" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQzP3sq_qedapOCCgyOpBEaQyfFIc89EZHzMiTI7q4gdZZxzkBtXqSPfR_DABn25G5qIVhEESJyFWwptgKTwbJC8j4AtZ8TXMT0gkRNo30GHvMSw7NFgn7fVWFIYZyGYD8lKTwM3TKi_BrTJaB3MVPwnhkGXQoc_Ln5Kfiksaiwz7erWkNhQ/w452-h640/Changes_4-_Night.jpg" width="452" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>Update 23 Oct 2023:</b> Missed one week, but I've put in the time for the 3rd page. Yes, there is still no perfect time. I had to put in the time, and what means saying no to just sitting back and binging on TV. I must say that for longer stories, it does make it less stressful when I'm focusing on just one page at a time. Perhaps what held me back from completing this was thinking about all the pages all at once, and that was a mountain of work. One page at a time helps me make it more manageable. On a side note, I almost wanted to capture my whole process on camera again. That's what happens when one makes videos, I suppose. I had to tell myself that some things should be off-camera. Some art is reserved purely for my own private time. Without the camera, I felt I could put in a lot more focus on this 3rd one as I inked it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Kg7CuD5RpVsmoMaBqmAkwlz67ATe5ng8w_GOcLHQjT15s-LuoPTb56YzVBftbfAB7zYcZJLsd9DG_nVSKC0H-sezqjsz8pNvcQJPZDtGOedtCBXjP29LlV0JGt-nXIULOzOiYZi1YdIlQQZRAqRIUtVY1FoqSfMw57tugf9SjYUUxnyjEw/s1375/changes_3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1375" data-original-width="942" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Kg7CuD5RpVsmoMaBqmAkwlz67ATe5ng8w_GOcLHQjT15s-LuoPTb56YzVBftbfAB7zYcZJLsd9DG_nVSKC0H-sezqjsz8pNvcQJPZDtGOedtCBXjP29LlV0JGt-nXIULOzOiYZi1YdIlQQZRAqRIUtVY1FoqSfMw57tugf9SjYUUxnyjEw/w438-h640/changes_3.jpg" width="438" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>Update: 6 Oct 2023: </b>And here is the second page! But it's still art. I find that exploring other forms of art or experimenting without other kinds of art tools does expand my skill in drawing. For making 3-D models like these, it gives me more insight into texture, materials, light and shadow and even painting. So I try not to just stick with one kind of art form (even when it makes me feel like an amateur again) for too long. It's good to explore and expand. It keeps me learning. And learning makes me feel alive!</div><div><br /></div><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/QdSe0ZYbTWA?si=5OOn3pOMkxTH3bZv" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QdSe0ZYbTWA/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-76219207774903739862023-12-10T21:45:00.004+08:002023-12-10T21:45:31.032+08:00Using cheap grungy old brushes to get interesting lines<p>I love hunting down new art tools that can give me interesting lines. And I've paid a lot for some of them. However, some of these tools can be found at home or very cheaply as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOkRZd4-rHTsxTXknLATKPg" target="_blank">Matt Celf</a> on Youtube reminded me. He uses a brush that he doesn't wash. So I used an old stiff cheap brush too, dipped it in indian ink, and this is what I got. I painted the colours with watercolours on watercolour paper. Yep, cheap old malfunctioning brushes can be amazing!</p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUEiweAwyn0osKvlZUDshgO2ELotvCz3wVfeEdMzbXwoh87W6s8iVIItfOUHZkJiC7_-uCaa1uIu9rCZanc-3lWcMS3oZdH3MuN4aU-04XkOJu6Jg7yGluC-hUoLi4grC0V9zn-ME11oG-CufqIQs6IqvDiBLT2ABBTgztkCIY3ofOPVAL3w/s1417/cat-sm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1417" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUEiweAwyn0osKvlZUDshgO2ELotvCz3wVfeEdMzbXwoh87W6s8iVIItfOUHZkJiC7_-uCaa1uIu9rCZanc-3lWcMS3oZdH3MuN4aU-04XkOJu6Jg7yGluC-hUoLi4grC0V9zn-ME11oG-CufqIQs6IqvDiBLT2ABBTgztkCIY3ofOPVAL3w/s16000/cat-sm.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGNAeLETRL0xI7LnIdyzlfvDc4HKKqIUiUTrzsWI3pSrZkVnf68r4krqx43jvYUXBhIP2hRSNtfh3jDsvO4zTI7aSTy9TuoPO6U9ohnXYeC3qSwG2rvW_8J9woilV6omKbgc2fgcHdwbBFBlF4zwwQpotnwDHRg3f3h1TD62MmnOpksxF98w/s1000/IMG_6306.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="565" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGNAeLETRL0xI7LnIdyzlfvDc4HKKqIUiUTrzsWI3pSrZkVnf68r4krqx43jvYUXBhIP2hRSNtfh3jDsvO4zTI7aSTy9TuoPO6U9ohnXYeC3qSwG2rvW_8J9woilV6omKbgc2fgcHdwbBFBlF4zwwQpotnwDHRg3f3h1TD62MmnOpksxF98w/s16000/IMG_6306.jpg" /></a></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-85395317843276185412023-12-05T11:43:00.002+08:002023-12-05T11:43:07.599+08:00Drawing mundane (almost boring) things<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Life for me seems to move really fast these days. Once I wake, I'm tempted to check my phone for new messages. And once I do that, it feels like my mind gets dragged along on a roller coaster ride for the rest of the day. To help me slow down, I did these two pages on separate occasions. Drawing mundane things trains my mind to focus on small things, similar to "stopping to smell the roses".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">When I drew the parts in my car, I realised how much design went into each part. And I had a thought- I spent money paying for this car and all the parts that go into it. And I'm only noticing that I'd purchased only 8-9 years later! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSQOWRvs07lTCDNNHWrQPy9AzntK0ZZCyRzGLw82CFvRwYd20jZaPpQOmJPQfzE3kL-JpkLVwiIbP6IvZQOBOmC6lBUFRN4PodO8YCwVuStDpmxCXjH5gcW_YruSFlpzZTUKyNN2WpXeltBuWWy_6HpANiQGHX_i0MXF2dGYSu9LajSreyQ/s1469/car_parts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1469" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSQOWRvs07lTCDNNHWrQPy9AzntK0ZZCyRzGLw82CFvRwYd20jZaPpQOmJPQfzE3kL-JpkLVwiIbP6IvZQOBOmC6lBUFRN4PodO8YCwVuStDpmxCXjH5gcW_YruSFlpzZTUKyNN2WpXeltBuWWy_6HpANiQGHX_i0MXF2dGYSu9LajSreyQ/s16000/car_parts.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I did the same for the things in my house. Roger and the Bulldog Coffee Corner)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I went back to the <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/U2FvL2MuJsq4C6hd9" target="_blank">Bulldog Coffee Corner.</a> This time with my friend Roger, pencils and chalk pastels. I gave their Kaya toast set (coffee, 2 eggs and toast with kaya and butter) another go. I ordered Kopi-si-kosong, which is coffee with evaporated milk and without any sugar or sweeteners. It's local coffee and it tastes different from western coffee. I hear that local coffee is roasted with butter, so the taste is different. I like both local coffee and western coffee. But not all stalls in Singapore make good local coffee. Local coffee from some stalls can taste diluted or bitter or just lacks flavour or aroma. This stall checks all the boxes for me- pleasant flavour, robust enough, aromatic. Still, this is subjective from person to person. As for me, I think it's good coffee and I'll be back. I do like the kaya here too. I like that it isn't overly sweet. The owner says he adds cinnamon sticks to the recipe. Perhaps that's why it has that nice flavour. Although Kaya toast set can be found all over Singapore, each stall makes it differently. I think it's great that the owner takes pride in making his kaya special. His eggs are soft but the yolk isn't runny. My wife like them runny, but I like them semi cooked like this. Ok I guess I should not go on and on haha! This is an art blog and not a food blog, after all!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I dug up my chalk pastels again. I've not used them for awhile. One reason I used them was because I've not made my December sketchbook and I was using an old unfinished sketchbook with paper that can't take watercolours. I had to use dry mediums. While sketching this page, I did learn one thing- if I rub the chalk on my finger and then rub my finger on the page, I can create a softer effect. Watch the video to see how I drew this page and also my thoughts as I drew it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJqrDwev4PbI3x43aIDuS_2MrrQtcFcnabWG8cW8bleQqlxj3ijipxP8btGOIOzAL0RJDOlMm6YAUrnveKa3-N1ZpwB8Q68xSu6YsDbpVnUPqk2woKCMQla72Z5gkIpuueytHdBALlWP1izGaAs2mkBBZ47CbHoN-NE6jlf8KqtnghrDkVvw/s1534/axexandra%20village%20food%20centre%20breakfast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1534" data-original-width="952" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJqrDwev4PbI3x43aIDuS_2MrrQtcFcnabWG8cW8bleQqlxj3ijipxP8btGOIOzAL0RJDOlMm6YAUrnveKa3-N1ZpwB8Q68xSu6YsDbpVnUPqk2woKCMQla72Z5gkIpuueytHdBALlWP1izGaAs2mkBBZ47CbHoN-NE6jlf8KqtnghrDkVvw/s16000/axexandra%20village%20food%20centre%20breakfast.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/oPbPPE39dso?si=2zR-N5QWtUIVFV7U" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/oPbPPE39dso/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div><br /></div>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-4043313738608931152023-11-29T10:33:00.001+08:002023-11-29T10:33:22.784+08:00Kaya toast morning and sketching with watercolours (ft. Bulldog Coffee Corner)<p>This was a few weeks back, before I went on vacation. On that morning, we went for a breakfast at a local food centre. I wanted to try out, for a second time, the local coffee , runny eggs and kaya toast from <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/GxuZhjpSAfxqgMMK8" target="_blank">Bulldog Coffee Corner</a>. An elderly man and lady runs the store. The lady said they make the kaya themselves and they only use quality ingredients. Even the butter is good butter, not margarine. The bread was soft and crisp and it was delicious. Their coffee had a nice aroma and flavour to it. I usually go for Toastbox or Ya Kun coffee, but this could be even better. My 1.5yr old, Toby, kept wanting more bread. We had to order an extra bread for him. </p><p>That time, before the enema, Toby kept crying lots because he was getting more and more constipated. He ate lots and nothing was coming out.</p><p>At the same time, I was trying to put together a Skillshare course (I still am). As a first-timer, the learning curve is rather steep. But I'm learning lots as I push forward. Sometimes, it's 1 step forward, 2 steps back. But it will get there.</p><p>Oh yes, the art style. Instead of my usual black pen on paper look, I decided to go watercolour on good watercolour paper. I have these good watercolour paper stored away for years now. When will I be ever using them? There isn't an ideal time. The time is now, I decided. And just started using them! Can't be precious about them. I'm not trying to follow any watercolour technique I've learned before. I'm almost drawing like I would a pen and trying to keep the colours fresh. And I'm also paying attention to tonal value contrasts to make the parts I want to stand out, stand out. Other than that, I'm experimenting. Writing the words out with a brush was also a nice change. Having it in colour rather than black and white gives the page a different look. A lot less control and the risk of making a mess is higher, but that's why the excitement of doing this is also higher. Just go for it, have fun, see what comes out of it. I do like what came out of it!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMz4yAHQZC8pSS8wBzZTVaIXPpFp2DAk44O88zp6BvBdNHpcLERA2qLaB3Znqx2FSdy3ItOvoMEZ9C0WxOeKE4tBzwpOaqt35v6eXNyW2DIAE1Ek4VznmWS7jsgzX_Y3W82BqgETQ7tqJB3-Hku5UVZuQ4yXhRtpGymPrMupGqDjXIk4oSWA/s1474/kaya%20toast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1474" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMz4yAHQZC8pSS8wBzZTVaIXPpFp2DAk44O88zp6BvBdNHpcLERA2qLaB3Znqx2FSdy3ItOvoMEZ9C0WxOeKE4tBzwpOaqt35v6eXNyW2DIAE1Ek4VznmWS7jsgzX_Y3W82BqgETQ7tqJB3-Hku5UVZuQ4yXhRtpGymPrMupGqDjXIk4oSWA/s16000/kaya%20toast.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Andrew Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17472679584496866691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37846845.post-77245161658930304892023-11-26T00:54:00.010+08:002023-11-29T11:19:01.111+08:00Vacation sketching and being creative about it<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/TUndr_v6300?si=1rygmyU49Vw46WkG" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TUndr_v6300/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Went for a vacation at <a href="https://www.theracha.com" target="_blank">The Racha</a>.
