Doing Better Every Day! comics for the National University Hospital of Singapore (NUH)

NUH wanted to highlight specific service improvement initiatives by different departments. And they wanted to showcase it in the form of comics. Initially, they imagined it to be in a regular 1-page comic format, like the Covid-19 Chronicles. But when I set out to work on this project, I realised that some stories were longer and some shorter, making it difficult to fit into a regular comic layout.

So I proposed a webcomic format, something we were all new to. But I felt it would be a fresh challenge and an interesting learning experience. This would be sent out as an email blast and most people would be reading this on the train or on the go on their handphones. And a webcomic would be easy to read on a handphone. Also, a webcomic's infinite scroll would allow the length of the comics to be very flexible. So we went with that direction

For the style of the comic, I decided on one that looks friendly and accessible to the mass audience since it would be read by the hospital's internal staff and also the public. It would need to be able to communicate the points clearly. So I gave the comic a limited colour palette and a line style where the lines would only appear when needed to make the drawing clearer. Otherwise, the coloured shapes would do the work of defining the person or object.

With that, I wrote the comic including the dialogue (Yes, in this project, I had to both write and draw) to demonstrate the main points of this service improvement initiative. We did 5 comics in total. Here is the first!:)

It was a pleasure working with the service improvement team at NUH on this!
